At the very beginning and very end of a total solar eclipse, you can see what is known as the "diamond ring" effect. For a few seconds, a small bit of the sun's disk shines through from behind the moon, creating a very bright light. I captured this "diamond ring" at the end of the Great American Eclipse on August 21, 2017.
